St Peter’s is proud to have students of different nationalities and cultures. Today, we have a recording of Ameesh saying a poem.

This is a book that my dad learned from when he was in school in India. The language is Tamil. The poem I say in the podcast is about a toy. My dad taught me the poem. The boys in the class asked me to teach them it too.

We had brilliant fun on Wednesday. To celebrate Science Week 2013, we made a human piano with 2nd, 5th and 6th class! We made it using a makey makey board and a scratch game. Check out our video! We’re so pleased with it. Archie, Patryk and Edward did a brilliant job presenting. The start of the video is an explanation and 2.38 is where the real music kicks in.

WED PARENTS

This week, the news has been full of photos and stories of the terrible tragedy in the Philippines. For adults, this can be very distressing but children can find stories and photos in the news really confusing too. This week’s Wednesday for Parents deals with tips for talking about your child about the news.

1. There are a number of news sites and programmes that are specifically for children. They can help to explain events in child-friendly language and steer away from some of the more sensational headlines in adult newspapers. On the RTE player, you can find News2day – in Peter’s, we often use this programme as part of lessons on listening and oral language. Newsround is a popular news programme for kids on BBC.

2. Listen to your child and talk about what they’re worried about. If your child is worried after news of local robberies, remind them of the steps that your family takes to keep yourselves safe. Remind them that you lock your doors at night or that you have an alarm.

3. Reassure your child. Every year, when we teach the children about earthquakes, volcanoes and weather conditions, the first thing they ask is ‘could it happen to us?’ For younger children, it’s usually enough to say that it happens thousands of miles away. Older children might want to know why we don’t get major earthquakes in Ireland. PBS Kids has some excellent suggestions about how to talk to different age-groups here . If you ever find that your child has a lot of questions about a particular topic, you can always come in and ask his/her class teacher if you can borrow books from our library or if they can recommend particular websites.

4. Finally, sometimes it’s easier for children to comprehend tragedies if they feel as if they can help. Donating money, clothes or toys can be good options, as can saying a prayer or lighting a candle.

What tips have you for talking to your child about the news? We’d love to hear your suggestions!

On Monday a new noticeboard went up on our corridor. Mr. Foley gave us an answer and we had to guess the question. The whole school including the teachers were allowed to guess the question, except for Mr. Foley because he knows what the question is. We were told that the answer was “Blue”.

There were many guesses put up on the noticeboard. On Tuesday we got a clue that it was related to “The Simpsons”, after Ian Lawless (6th Class) gave the closest question on Monday.  The six people that guessed it correctly were Mason, Ryan, Luke, Alan (all in 4th Class), Billy and Jamie (both in 6th Class). The correct question was “What colour are Maggie’s clothes?”.Mr. Foley stuck up red arrows to show the correct questions. He is going to give us a new answer every Monday up until Christmas.

Here is a sample of some of the other guesses put up;

What colour is Ms. Brennan’s car?

What colour is Marge’s hair?

What colour was Bart Simpson’s shorts?

What colour are Mr. Foley’s eyes?

What colour are the legs on the chairs and tables?

We made lava lamps. It was so cool! We wanted to do them because we saw that 3rd Class did them last year. You can see their work here. Why don’t you see our video? Later we will put up two more videos, our makey makey board and our volcanoes!

photo 1On the 8th of November, a GAA tournament for fifth and sixth classes took place in Bray Emmets GAA Club. There were six local schools involved. Our first match was against St. Fergal’s B team and we floored them with a whopping three goals and one point! Our second match was against Bray School Project and we scraped through with a one goal lead. After another win against St. Fergal’s A team, we left the stadium delighted and victorious. It was a great tournament and we would like to thank Paddy for all his hard work. Thanks also to Ms. Whyte and Ms. Sexton for letting the boys go.

In St Peter’s, we try to use real life examples for work on reading comprehension skills. This includes newspaper articles, websites, recipes and instruction manuals.

Last week, in 5th class, Ms Sexton gave each group of four in the class a kit with flower bulbs, soil and flowerpots. We had to follow the instructions carefully – different bulbs needed to stick out of the soil at different heights. We also had to place them in a cold, dark place for the first few weeks. After a lot of brainstorming, Ryan suggested Les’s room. We have to remember to water them every week.

Here’s an Animoto with some of the pictures of us working on our kits:

We’ve also signed up for Incredible Edibles, which will take place in the Spring. Have you planted any flowers for the Spring yet?

Congratulations to the boys and girls who were presented with their Seatbelt Sheriff certificates recently. They worked very hard to earn the certs, wearing their badges to remind family and friends how important it is to wear your seatbelt. Well done all!
