Big news this week on the blog! Our first post of this week and our most recent deal with the same exciting story… And that’s before we discuss the Mini-Scientist Showcase and Hallelujah Choir Concert! We’d better get started…

The headlines from this week are:

  • Last Sunday, we posted our nominations for the EduBlog awards and we were delighted to receive nominations from ‘If only the best birds sang’, anseo.net and Seomra Ranga. We were delighted to find out on Friday that we’ve been shortlisted for the voting stages for the awards. We’d be extremely grateful for your support, you can find the information on voting here.
  • This week saw the Mini-Scientist showcase! After all our hard work, 4th, 5th and 6th classes were delighted to show off all of the fantastic Science Fair projects on Wednesday. Congratulations to all the participants, to the runner-up group of Tommy, DylanM and Mason from 4th class and to the winning group of Sam, LukeO’B, AaronG and Davy, who go forward to the Regional Finals. Over the past few weeks, St Peter’s has been a hive of activity preparing for our Mini-Scientist Showcase. You can see all of our previous posts about preparing for it here! We were delighted to welcome two judges from Intel to the school – Sarah and Emily. We’ve had plenty of interaction with them over the past few months, by email and on Twitter so it was lovely to put faces to names! All of the staff remarked on how much time and attention that the judges gave to each project. It was an amazing opportunity for the students to present their work and to answer questions about their experiments. Sarah and Emily were really impressed with how much effort all the students put in and with their interest in Science!

Congratulations to all the students who were rewarded for their great work with fantastic prize bags from Intel. The judges found it difficult to choose winners but finally chose a 2nd place group and a 1st place! The 2nd place prize went to Dylan Mason, Mason Kelly and Tommy Lang from 4th class for their project on what colours birds were attracted to. The judges praised how well they discussed their project and their original idea. The winners on the day were from 5th class – Sam Smith, Luke O’Brien, Davy Berry-O’Connell and Aaron Grey for their project on game controllers. They used combinations of Electric Paint, MakeyMakey, Scratch and Lego to test the best controllers for a PacMan game. We will be showcasing projects over the next few weeks on the blog but for the moment, check out our Animoto of photos from the day.

Best of luck to Sam, Luke, Davy and Aaron, who take their project to the Regional Final on Monday December 16th!

P.S. have you heard? St Peter’s has been nominated for an EduBlog award – read all about it and vote here!

On Thursday night, Singing Club showed off all their hard work from the first term at the Hallelujah Choir Concert in CityWest Hotel. 24 boys and girls travelled on a bus for an afternoon of rehearsals and practice. The concert kicked off at 8pm and we were delighted to see plenty of familiar faces in the audience! The St Peter’s group were the life and soul of the party – even starting dance moves in the crowd. Special guests at the concert included Seo Linn, who during the Summer teamed up with Lurgan for their take on ‘Wake Me Up’, Connie Talbot and Tabby Callaghan. We had a fantastic evening with Paddy, Ms Sexton, Mr Foley and Ms Whyte. Thanks very much to Paddy for all his hard work organising the trip and to Ms Sexton and Mr Foley for helping with rehearsals on Thursdays, and of course to the boys and girls who were a credit to the school! We were very proud to unroll the super-banner and declare ourselves St Peter’s boys and girls!

On Thursday, we’d a visit from Hugh and Ian from Wicklow Mountain National Park. Each class got to choose a topic to learn about. 5th class chose to learn about Irish mammals. We learned a lot and we got to hold stuffed animals and skulls. We also listened to recordings of wildlife sounds. We really enjoyed the visit and put together a podcast of facts about Irish mammals. Andy interviewed the class for this podcast. Thanks to Hugh and Ian for such an interesting talk!

2nd Class were delighted to welcome Baby Tristan on his first visit to St Peter’s. He was a brilliant teacher and we learned so much. We are looking forward to the next few months getting to know our great teacher. Thanks Tristan and Gwen!

Between preparations for the Mini-Scientist showcase (photos to follow) and Hallelujah Choir, not to mention our Christmas play, this week’s post is a little bit late!

This week is a tutorial on how to use Animoto! We discovered Animoto last June as a way to display our photos. The Animoto that made the most impact was the one on our Open Day.

Animoto can be used as a way for your child to present a project. It’s also a lovely way to display photos as a slideshow. It can be shared online by email or social media. Today we’ve a step-by-step way to set up an Animoto project. We hope you find it useful!

The photos I chose to work with are these ones from around the school. I usually copy and paste all the photos I want to use into a folder in ‘Pictures’ so that I can get to them easily, but you don’t need to.

2nd Class have done so well with their reading this term. They have read three books, all written by Roald Dahl! They have read The Magic Finger, The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me and Esio Trot.

Why not listen to our latest podcast about Esio Trot? We also think back and chat about all of the books!

As you may know already, we’ve close links with South Dublin Library Service! You can read our post on Leon’s review for them here. We asked our friend @SummerBuzz if she had any good suggestions for books to make Polly feel more at home (especially because Polly was reading the ‘Frozen Planet’ book on Kia’s chair when we came in this morning).

Summer Buzz’s cousin, Winter Buzz, left us a Voki with a suggestion! Thanks Summer Buzz and Winter Buzz! It’s so cool that we can interact with different groups, organisations and even bees through all our technology in St Peter’s!

P.S. Check out Polly’s new jumper! Thanks Abi and Molly for making it for her!

This year the #eddies13 (EduBlog Awards) are 10 years old. The awards reward educators, students, teachers and educational communities who reach out to inform, include and inspire others. We were absolutely delighted when three of our favourite blogs, www.anseo.netwww.seomraranga.com and www.merrybeau.edublogs.org nominated us for our blogging and podcasting work, and we only felt it appropriate that we give back by nominating those sites that have helped us in the past 11 months on our blogging road. We hope that it reflects the help and guidance we have received from those below, and please be assured that there were many, many others all worthy of a nomination… you know who you are!

The process for nominating is available at edublogawards.com, after which there is a voting process and finally, an awards ceremony.

We hope you enjoy our nominations and you might be inspired to read the incredible work of those linked below!

By Ms Sexton and Ms Brennan

We nominate Seomra Ranga as the best individual blog because on our opinion it is one of the most comprehensive, influential and user-friendly resources. It provides effective, colourful and practical resources and encourages others to collaborate in a non-commercial, free and inclusive manner.
EdBlogs is a one-stop-shop for the movers and shakers in education in Ireland with an online platform, and was our first port of call when we ourselves began blogging.
Without a doubt, this is one of the best-run blogs in Ireland at primary level. Merrybeau and her class have a wonderful blog that is consistently updated and showcases some extremely impressive technology and innovative application of the curriculum in 2nd Class. This blog was also particularly encouraging to us when we started blogging this year.
  • Best ed tech / resource sharing blog – Anseo.net
We like Anseo.net because it provides teachers with resources, motivates us to inform ourselves about changes in education in Ireland, and also analyses change by inviting guest posts. It’s a brilliantly inclusive and innovative site run by two extremely impressive teachers in their own right.
Evelyn O’Connor is an inspiration because she manages to not only inspire her class on a daily basis, but her blog posts and musings elevate education matters to the national media. She gives teachers credibility and inspires passionate response from everyone who reads her words and wish they had expressed them themselves.
While our school is not in South Dublin, we have found the staff of South Dublin Libraries to be extremely helpful in encouraging our children to be more proactive in engaging with the library service in our own area. Their site is easy to navigate and makes the borrowing process as easy as possible.
It is most appropriate that the most influential post of the year should come from our nominee for the best teaching blogger of the year. Evelyn’s post called on us all to sit up and face up to practical concerns second-level teachers have. Her passionate display in presenting her arguments was an inspiration to all.
  • Best individual tweeter – @groganbee
Bianca Grogan’s day job is as a 4th Class teacher; however on a daily basis she shares resources without any expectation of reward. Her tweets on the flipped classroom, science and human rights are particularly outstanding, and she is totally inspirational in how she encourages other teachers on Twitter.
  • Best twitter hashtag – #edchatie
An invaluable hashtag for both new and established  teachers. Perfect for keeping up to date with developments in Irish education during the week and then as the home for topical discussion on education matters on Monday nights. Thanks to @fboss for facilitating these discussions – a fantastic way to interact with other educators.
St Peter’s makes extensive use of podcasts on the blog and Soundcloud is our method of choice! The ease in editing and publishing gives makes it an invaluable tool.
Scoil Mhuire TV is an example of the innovative use of video in education. The sheer volume of videos is impressive, all broken up into channels. It deserves special mention for their excellent animations and wonderful Lockout film!
  • Best open PD / unconference / webinar series – CESImeet
We first attended the CESImeet last October and it won’t be our last! We met some inspiring educators and picked up many ideas, including the MakeyMakey board from @groganbee. We can’t wait to go to the next one!
  • Best educational use of a social network – Science Week
This year’s Science Week Ireland @scienceweek made excellent use of Twitter, in particular the #SciWeek2013 hashtag. They provided links to stimulate interest and help with classroom planning. They also retweeted activities and interacted with schools. An excellent use of Twitter to provide encouragement and support.
Animoto is a fantastic mobile app and we use it regularly on our blog.  Again, its ease of use is the main reason for its nomination – it provides a simple but highly effective and beautiful way to showcase the work of our students.
  • Lifetime achievement  – @MagsAmond
Mags is somebody who has inspired us through her use of blogging, programming and teaching. Her online persona is someone who is deeply experienced, technologically progressive and hugely influential in helping newbies like ourselves to get started. Her tweets have been particularly informative to us about programming, and she has also helped us to get involved in the CESI community
