One of the very first ‘Wednesday for Parents’ posts was also one of our most popular – it listed a number of websites and online activities to help your child with place value. You can find that post here. When we planned a follow up post, fractions jumped out as an important one to cover. The activities below have been laid out so that you can choose a particular area of fractions to work on or revise, or you can choose from the games further down in the post to work on a more general area. As always, although we’ve checked out the websites, we can’t guarantee that they’re...

Welcome to a brand new year of Wednesday for Parents! It seems fitting to start the year with a post on resolutions – digital resolutions! I found this post over the holidays on ‘10 New Year’s Resolutions for Digital Families‘ on uknowkids.com and they’ve kindly agreed to allow me to share it here. Uknowkids.com has an excellent blog with fantastic resources for parents about safety online. The author of the post, Tim Woda, also has a number of excellent resources on his blog – which you can find here. These resolutions are practical, easy to implement and really...

Today marks the last ‘Wednesday for Parents’ post of 2013! We hope to gradually build up a bank of resources for parents so if you find something that we should be telling others about, please let Ms Sexton know! This week’s post is all about fun websites for the days leading up to Christmas! (It’s also quite a short one – mainly due to this – very excited to see you all tomorrow!) As always, all sites were checked when this post was published but St Peter’s is not responsible for the content of external websites. First one is the official NORAD Santa...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… But what about when it’s actually the most difficult time of the year? This week’s ‘Wednesday for Parents’ deals with the difficult topic of how to cope with Christmas when you’re bereaved and grieving – particularly how to access resources to help children to cope at Christmas time after the death of a loved one. Above anything else, I want to emphasise that this post is only intended as a list of resources – everyone grieves in different ways and what works for one person, mightn’t work for...

Between preparations for the Mini-Scientist showcase (photos to follow) and Hallelujah Choir, not to mention our Christmas play, this week’s post is a little bit late! This week is a tutorial on how to use Animoto! We discovered Animoto last June as a way to display our photos. The Animoto that made the most impact was the one on our Open Day. Animoto can be used as a way for your child to present a project. It’s also a lovely way to display photos as a slideshow. It can be shared online by email or social media. Today we’ve a step-by-step way to set up an Animoto project. We...

Am I allowed to talk about it yet?? As of today, there are 28 sleeps to Christmas! Here’s a list of all the things of all things Christmassy in Bray and a bit further away. We’d like to think of this as a starter list, so we can add to it as the month goes on. We will also have a separate post later in the month with all the details of masses, carol services etc in St Peter’s Parish! Obviously, the main date for your diary is the 18th December for St Peter’s Primary’s performances of Roald Dahl’s ‘Cinderella’ – always a popular event and we’re...

This Wednesday, we’re going to focus on just one website – Help My Kid Learn! Help My Kid Learn is a website by NALA (National Adult Literacy Agency) to help parents to develop their children’s learning at home. The activities are broken up into different age-groups. The activities fall under the categories of ‘Talk’, ‘Play’, ‘Read’, ‘Write’ and ‘Count’ and discusses how to approach the activity, why the activity is important and how to follow on from the activity. They also have suggestions for online activities...

This week, the news has been full of photos and stories of the terrible tragedy in the Philippines. For adults, this can be very distressing but children can find stories and photos in the news really confusing too. This week’s Wednesday for Parents deals with tips for talking about your child about the news. 1. There are a number of news sites and programmes that are specifically for children. They can help to explain events in child-friendly language and steer away from some of the more sensational headlines in adult newspapers. On the RTE player, you can find News2day – in Peter’s,...

This week, our ‘Wednesday for Parents’ post deals with an issue that worries many parents out there – Internet safety. Sometimes talking about technology with children can be like trying to speak a language that the adult is only learning and that the kids are already fluent in! It can be difficult to talk about keeping themselves safe online, when they seem to be the experts. The resources we’ve picked out this week will help you to open the discussion about what your child knows about keeping him/herself safe online! First, a website! Webwise is a fantastic resource....
