This year, for Engineer’s Week, we had a very exciting event as we had our first ever Junior K’NEX Challenge. As you know, our senior version is well-established – you can read all about this year’s event here and last year’s version is here. Senior Infants and 2nd class were the perfect combination to work together on the K’NEX Challenge. With four sets of siblings and lots of cousins, we made the teams into family affairs and we think you’ll be very impressed by their fantastic work. The challenge was to design and make a bridge. Last week, 2nd class welcomed Baby M back to the school after the Christmas break and we couldn’t believe how much she has grown. Jerry noticed that she got taller and Leon noticed that she has even more hair. Our theme at the moment is sleep. We’re learning about active sleep, deep sleep, transitions and REM. We were talking about dreams and nightmares. We all shared something with the group. Ms Whyte told us that Baby M sleeps very well. We all got a chance to talk to Baby M and to play with her. A couple of weeks ago, our good friend Summer Buzz sent us a link to a Youtube video of ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ recorded by Michael Rosen, one of the authors. It’s become very popular in second class and our teacher noticed that ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ has been the most in-demand book in 2nd class this week! We’ve been working on our Geography projects in 2nd class over the last couple of weeks and here’s a little update on how we’ve been getting on. First, we broke up into groups and chose a question related to Bray. One group answered the question ‘What makes Bray a good place for children to live in?’ Another group chose ‘Where would you find water in Bray?’ and a third group answered the question ‘How do people travel to and around Bray?’ We worked in our groups to design posters to illustrate the answers to our questions after a lot of discussions.... 

Welcome to our catch up post about the 1st and 2nd class Christmas play – ‘Stable Manners’. Stable Manners tells the story of three animals, Bessie (played by Adem), Cecil (played by Maddy) and Chuck (played by Cian), who are arguing over who will get to have Neddy’s stall in the stable (alas, poor Neddy!). This December, 2nd class were busier than Santa’s elves making and sewing Christmas decorations for their families. They made Christmas logs, sewed Christmas decorations and stockings. Some of us even used our Christmas logs in the middle of the table during Christmas dinner. Check out our Animoto of all our decorations on the last day before the holidays.

At the moment, 2nd class are covering Emotions as their theme in Roots of Empathy. We had a visit from Baby M last week and we couldn’t get over how much she has changed in just a few weeks! We made a podcast about her visit and an Animoto of our pictures from her visit. Well done to Anthony who led his first podcast!  

As you know, St Peter’s really enjoyed taking part in the Mathletes Challenge last year, and we were delighted to win Best Primary School in Leinster, and we’ve been very involved in promoting Khan Academy and Mathletes to other schools and teachers. Although only the senior classes can take part in Mathletes, 2nd class have been involved in a really exciting project recently trying out the Early Math content on Khan Academy.
