Welcome to Engineers Week in St Peter’s! This morning in 5th class, we started thinking about what we know about engineers. We started by thinking individually about words that come to mind when we hear the word ‘engineer’. We also drew pictures of what we think an engineer looks like. Next, we worked in pairs to discuss what we know about engineers. Then we shared our work with the rest of the class. We made a Wordle to show what we think an engineer does, at the start of Engineers Week. We’re going to make another one on Friday to assess what we’ve learned in the...

Even though the weather today was AWFUL, 5th class still managed to cover activities in the Outdoor and Adventure Activities strand of the PE curriculum… Although we didn’t quite brave outdoors! The PE curriculum covers six strands: Dance Games Gymnastics Athletics Aquatics Outdoor and Adventure Activities Every week, Paddy organises athletics with each class. Today, he set up a teamwork challenge for us. You can watch our video here. We had to try to get from one end of the hall to the other, using two mats, without touching the floor. Our follow-up activity was a maze of cones and...

On Monday we had a wonderful treat in Ms. Mitchell’s class because almost all of the class put in an extra super effort to our tests on Friday and had some truly impressive results! Ms. Mitchell was so proud that we even had TWO pupils of the week instead of one! As a reward we made fruit smoothies in class and got to watch footage of the Winter Olympics while drinking them. We chopped up the fruit, added yoghurt and orange juice and blended carefully, with the help of the wonderful Ms. Flanagan. We think they tasted YUM!

This month our theme is “The Body”. We are exploring all of the different senses that the body has. This week we investigated the senses of sight and hearing. We predicted what we might see and hear around the school corridors. Next we took a “sensory walk” around our school , first with our eyes closed so that we could focus on everything we could hear! Afterwards we walked around with our ears covered so that we could just focus on everything we would see! We had a lot of fun! We found out that our school is a noisy, busy and colourful place!

Hi this is Johnny, from 5th class. My Write-A-Book project is about a superhero who saves the world’s biggest jewel. I finished my story and I started editing it today. It’s really easy to edit on the laptop because you can right-click to get help with spellings. Mr McAdam, the student teacher, helped me to edit my story. Next I have to do my illustrations and my cover. Here’s a podcast from my class about how they’re all getting on:

We are doing the theme of time this month. We used all of our new “time” words and made sure to get them to rhyme too! We also made our own ones  and they’ll be up outside the classroom soon. We hope you like our poem! *           Tick tock o’clock Tick tock around all day. Big hand, small hand, Moves around all day. Clockwise forward, anti-clockwise back, Ticking around all day. Tick tocking, click clocking, Time never stops stopping!

Earlier this year, we studied Van Gogh and we collaborated to recreate some of his most famous works. Van Gogh was born in 1853 in The Netherlands. He was famous for using bold colours. First, we used pastels to each make a sunflower. Van Gogh painted the two paintings in his Sunflower series in the 1880s. We looked at the colours he used and then made our own sunflower. Two of the boys made a vase for our sunflowers.  Next, we looked at The Starry Night. The Starry Night was painted by Van Gogh in 1889. It is made up of lots of different blues and greys. Ms Sexton found a picture of The Starry...

St Peter’s is delighted to announce that our first annual Spelling Bee will take place on Friday, January 31st! We received our pack of rules, word lists and a dictionary from Easons this week. The Spelling Bee is a national contest, organised by Easons and Tubridy on 2fm. You can read more about it here. 5th and 6th classes will take part in the school competition and then one winner will go forward to represent the school at the county final. Wondering how to prepare for the Spelling Bee? We suggest that you read as much as possible because the more words you come across,...

Some of our activities so far have been: researching different types of transport studying maps of the London Underground reading and responding to transport themed poetry writing about our dream journeys working on our transport project We’ve also discussed where our dream travel destinations would be and we’ve been working with Google Maps to explore the world. We found this really cool website that lets you make up a worldwide treasure hunt and we made up clues about where we’d like to visit. Here’s a class...

Before Christmas, 5th class had a Little Book Club where we read the four nominees for the BGE Book Awards Children’s Book (Junior) award to our little cousins or brothers. Well done to Ameesh, Oisín, AaronG, Alan, Johnny and especially to AaronJ for leading it. Check out our podcast discussing how we got on: Laureate na nÓg contacted us on Twitter today to let us know about the nomination process for children. We think that 5th class have already chosen their nomination – Chris Judge is highly praised by our Little Book Club. You can read more about the nomination process here. Can...
