This week, we’re integrating our usual work (along with other exciting events) with Tech Week Ireland and with Digital Art Week. One way that 5th class have taken part in both events was to experiment with SketchUp. SketchUp has a bit of a history in St Peter’s. In 2009, 6th class at the time were declared the Senior Engineering Class of Ireland. In the lead up to the finals, they presented a project at the BT Young Scientist Primary Science Fair (and won the top prize on the day with two other schools!). The class were looking out for ways to develop their project and Leon (Kelsey...

In the latest ‘reflection’ post from the Eircom Junior Spiders Awards, we share some of the exciting interviews we gave on the day. We were so lucky to be interviewed by Ireland’s largest independent radio station, Today FM. Juliette from Today FM interviewed Caoilynn, Tommy, James, Oisín and Ms. Brennan. It was an amazing experience, especially considering that tens of thousands of people listen to this station every day! Well done to our brilliant students who did us proud as always. Listen to the clips from the 1pm and 4pm news below! Thanks to Today FM for letting us put...

After many months of learning about stop-motion animations, apps, lighting, sound, props and recording… here it is. Our complete Creative Schools Awards project in one massive blogpost! So… here it is! Our project has taken us four months to complete. We decided to use our love of ICT and Art in as creative and interesting a way as possible in putting together a stop-motion animation project. We got the idea as early in the year, during Culture Night 2013, our local theatre (The Mermaid) ran a number of events on the night, including children’s animation workshops. We in St. Peter’s...

The 2014 Eircom Junior Spiders winners were announced at a ceremony at Google HQ in Dublin today. Hosted by RTÉ’s Aidan Power, the awards recognise and reward primary and post primary students for the innovative ways they use the internet, especially around website development, school blogs and design. At primary level, the Mega Spiders have three categories – Best Project, Best School Blog and Best School Website. There is also a Grand Prix award for the overall winner. We were delighted to win both awards for Best School Blog and the Grand Prix! “What a fantastic bunch of winners we...

Today we’ve an unusual Easter egg hunt in 5th class – we used Mission MapQuest to have a European Easter egg hunt – all without leaving the library! We used the clues from our Folens workbook ‘Where on Earth? 5th class’ on the exercise on the EU. Here’s the link if you’d like to play along: EU Easter hunt

You may have noticed the new noticeboard outside 5th class focusing on their recent adventures in Design and Make.   It’s all part of Ms Sexton’s course in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and as you can see from the Prezi – the students of 5th class had all of the good ideas in this lesson! Click on the title of the post to check out our Vines and see what happened when we tested them – watch Adam’s closely!

On Monday St. Kieran’s visited St. Peter’s for the second time this year to take play a friendly football match.  Both teams had children from different classes and a special mention goes to the girls on each team who ran rings around the boys! Kathleen and Kelly Anne for St. Kieran’s and Abbi for St. Peter’s  played brilliantly. The result was a draw in the end with both schools winning one match each. The next time the schools will meet will be on Monday the 28th of April! We can’t wait for our next set of matches. Thanks to Paddy, the best coach ever! By the boys...

A couple of weeks ago, we were thrilled and excited to get news that we’d won a prize from STEPS for our work during Engineer’s Week. Sam, AaronG, LukeOB and Davy from 5th class had seen Scientific Sue in action at the Intel Regional Finals of the Mini-Scientist and they raised the excitement levels by telling everyone how cool her show was! You can check out her website here – we highly recommend her show! One of the coolest things about the prize was that we were allowed to invite other schools to join in the fun. The first session of the day was at 9.45.

We, in 5th class, have been updating our bulletin boards this week and one of our boards in the corridor celebrates the year so far! We chose our favourite photos and memories from the year so far. Can you guess what featured in our favourites? Check out our Animoto to see what made the cut!

5th class have been reading ‘War Horse’ as their class novel and have been really enjoying it! Michael Morpurgo is an amazing author and the book is fantastic, but we’ve struggled with some of the vocabulary – particularly related to horses. One thing we love about Twitter and blogging is that it opens up the classroom to the world around us. A couple of years ago, we went on a school tour to the Irish National Stud in Kildare. The tour guides were excellent and we really enjoyed the day. We highly recommend it as a family day out! You can visit their website at here. We...
