On Friday the 31st of January, 2014, 5th and 6th class took part in the first St Peter’s Spelling Bee. The competition involved getting a word from the easy list in the first round, the medium list in the second round and the hard list in the final round. Whenever we spelled one of our words wrong, we were out. We could get the word in a sentence to help us, and in the final round, we could also get the definition. The last two left standing was Jamie from 6th, and me. We were trying to win at the knockout stages for about 15 minutes. In the end, I won. I am going to the Regional Finals...
We are doing the theme of time this month. We used all of our new “time” words and made sure to get them to rhyme too! We also made our own ones and they’ll be up outside the classroom soon. We hope you like our poem! * Tick tock o’clock Tick tock around all day. Big hand, small hand, Moves around all day. Clockwise forward, anti-clockwise back, Ticking around all day. Tick tocking, click clocking, Time never stops stopping!
St Peter’s is delighted to announce that our first annual Spelling Bee will take place on Friday, January 31st! We received our pack of rules, word lists and a dictionary from Easons this week. The Spelling Bee is a national contest, organised by Easons and Tubridy on 2fm. You can read more about it here. 5th and 6th classes will take part in the school competition and then one winner will go forward to represent the school at the county final. Wondering how to prepare for the Spelling Bee? We suggest that you read as much as possible because the more words you come across,...
Our project asked the question ‘which slime is the strongest?’ We made two types of slime – one was with borax, PVA glue and water. The second was made from cornflour and water. The cornflour slime didn’t work because it just stayed as a liquid but the borax stretched well. We found the instructions online but if we were making the cornflour slime again, we’d use less water and more cornflour. We made slime in 2nd class and it was really strong. We think if we made more of the borax slime, it would work better. We also could have added food colouring to make it look...
The question was ‘can we make a lightbulb light up without using any wires?’ We were able to make it work using tinfoil as a conductor. When we were researching our project, we found out that it’s not just wires that can conduct electricity. We found that tinfoil was the handiest one to use instead of a wire because you can twist it and it’s flexible. We didn’t think it would really work, so we were surprised when it did. Our favourite part of the project was when it actually worked. We liked talking to the judges and we enjoyed making our display. You can try it...
Our project was called ‘Does one hand react quicker than the other?’ We tested our question using two tests – one was by putting your hand into a bowl of ice and seeing how long you could leave it there in seconds. The other test was the ruler test, where you let the ruler go and see how quickly you can catch it again. We found that with the ice, your dominant hand can last much longer in the ice than your non-dominant hand. There wasn’t as much of a difference in the ruler test, which surprised us because we thought it would have a much greater difference. When we were...
Brotherly love! On Friday everybody in St. Peter’s had a chance to win a golden ticket to the B.T. Young Scientist and Primary Science Fair. Me [Eduard] and my brother Lester won the golden ticket from twitter to go. We got to bring our whole family! It was a great day. We decided to write your a blog post to tell you all about it. We went to the entrance and into the Minerva suite to get our wristbands. It was so great! We got a book about the history of the building and project. We went to the Discover Primary Science school section first and we saw lots of good things. The first thing...
Cinderella, via Animoto! There are many great days in St Peter’s every year. There are great days when we all feel as if we’ve worked together to achieve something special and great days when our fantastic students get to show off the results of all their hard work. Of all the great days in the school calendar, there’s a special one that stands out – we love our Christmas play! We had our first performance at 11.30 a.m. on the Thursday morning and our second at 7 p.m. and we had a ball from start to finish. For those who aren’t familiar with our Christmas plays, we...
During the first term, our students from 4th, 5th and 6th classes worked really hard to prepare science projects for the Intel Mini-Scientist showcase. For all who didn’t get a chance to see the projects on the day, we have decided to hold our very first Virtual Science Show. Over the next month, we’re going to showcase our projects as part of our participation in the Discover Primary Science Award. We look forward to telling you all about our projects and reading your comments. Watch out for guest appearances from 2nd and 3rd, who were too young for the Mini-Scientist Showcase this...
On the 16th of December 2013, 6th Class were offered to go to Festina Lente horse riding club. To start off, 4 people went to a stable to ride on horses and trot. Eduard, Archie, Adam and Lester were first to go on the horses. We all had an amazing time and look forward to our next visit! Sky, Dylan and Kevin were at the workshop first. They made soaps with the shapes of snowmen, Christmas trees, love hearts and stars. They had to pick their scent and colour to make it and then some of the people there put hot liquid in the shape of the person’s choice. They also made wishes to Santa, which they...
